The Alan D. Rowe Memorial Digital Arts Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Alan's friends and colleagues in memory of his commitment, spirit and dedication as a student in the Digital Arts Program. Alan was already an established jazz musician and teacher when he returned to Golden West College to enter the world of computers and digital art. Taking one or two classes a semester he became a fixture in the department. With his British charm, big smile and curly white hair, he was a familiar friend across campus. Never one to give up, he graduated in May 2008 at the age of 74 with a certificate in Digital Arts. Alan lost his battle with cancer in early 2009, but his spirit and determination lives on thru this scholarship.

First of all…
What makes a good Jazz Solo?
A good Jazz solo, like any good musical composition, comprises a creative mixture of harmony, melody, rhythm and space. These facets are interwoven artistically into flowing, meaningful musical statements and responses, the complexity of which is left to the individual artist. The lack of any of these ingredients results in an inferior type of music all the way down to ... mindless noise!
What then is Improvisation?
Improvisation is anything you play which transgresses from written notation. This includes: any rephrasing of the melody, the interpretation of chord symbols and the creation of fills for vocal or instrumental accompaniment, all the way up to fully improvised solos.
What is an Improvised Solo?
An Improvised Solo is the creation of a new melody line, as suggested by the sound of the harmony of a composition. It is based on the original or altered chord changes of a composition.
Understanding the Harmonic Content.
The Jazz Soloist is a composer who composes instantly .... off the top of his or her head. He or she gets only one chance to play the right notes .... On the spot! Immediately! Right now! A thorough study of the harmonic structure of music is therefore essential. The more thorough and complete your knowledge, the better will become your soloing.
